Group 4-Yuuichi, Square

Square-

a plane figure with four equal straight sides and four right angles.

My Mom made me brownies last night and she cut them into squares.

The area of the brownie is 4 inches and about 10 centimeters.

Group 3-Eric, Rectangle

Rectangle-A 4-sided flat shape with straight sides where all interior angles are right angles (90°). Also opposite sides are parallel and of equal length.

I looked in Good Housekeeping magazine and I found lots of advertisements that had rectangle shapes.  I chose the Kleenex box because I have the same box in my house so I could measure it for the perimeter.

 

The perimeter of a Kleenex box is 32 inches and about 81 centimeters

Rhombus-Ivan

The definition of a rhombus is a flat shape with 4 equal straight sides.

While my Mom and I were walking to school yesterday morning, I noticed a sign on the street was a rhombus.

 

The area of the sign is 100 inches and 254 centimeters

Group 2-Rhombus-Ethan

Rhombus- is a flat shape with 4 equal straight sides.

Yesterday my Mom and I went for a walk on the beach.  There were several people flying kites.  I noticed that the kites were in the shape of a rhombus.



The area of the kite was 144 inches and approximately 366 centimeters

Group 1- Aurora, Triangle

The definition of a triangle is a polygon with three edges and three vertices

My Grandma made a cherry pie last night for dessert.  She cut the pie into triangle slices.

 

 

The perimeter of the slice of pie is 33 inches and about 33 centimeters.

My Mom ordered us pizza last night and when I picked up a slice I noticed that my pizza slice was in the shape of a triangle.

The perimeter of my slice of pizza is 22 inches and about 52 centimeters.

While I was eating Doritos, I noticed that their shape was a triangle.

 

 

Doritos have a perimeter of 6 inches and approximately 15 centimeters

 

Group 1-Triangles Kaiden

I found a triangle on my Dad's pool table.  It is the rack that holds the pool table balls.

The perimeter is 36 inches and approximately 92 centimeters

What are geometric shapes?

Each group will have a specific task to follow.  Once you complete your task, you must post your answers on this blog.  Have fun and don't be afraid to explore your environment.

Group 1 (triangles)-Kaiden, Giorgi, Prabhleen and Aurora

• Take a photo of a triangle that you would find inside your house
• With a ruler, measure the item and find the perimeter of the item in inches and centimeters

Group 2 (rhombus)-Ethan, Ivan, Marta, Albiona

• Define a rhombus
• Take a photo of a rhombus that you would find outdoors in your environment.
• With a ruler, measure the item you found and find record the area of that item in inches and the nearest centimeter.

Group 3 (rectangles)-Adam, Eric, Diyora, Rushona

• Define a rectangle.
• Look in a magazine, look for a rectangle and take a photo of the picture.
• With a ruler, measure the item and record the area of the item in inches and the nearest centimeter.

Group 4 (squares)-Eduard, Sherzod, Yuuichi

• Define a square.
• Take a photo of a square you would find inside your house.
• With a ruler, measure the item and record the perimeter of the shape in inches and the nearest centimeter.
